About Martha&s Monthly

The name Martha's Monthly comes from Mr. Klein himself. He frequently referred to common Albertans as "The Marthas and the Henrys" and almost as frequently he asked for the public's feedback. We decided that if all the Marthas of Alberta decided to get their Monthly on the same day then we might really have an impact. We've kept it up with Premier Stelmach.

People who frequently engage in political discussions do seem to know more about politics. The knowledge gains actually seem to be larger for women, but this is because women who rarely, if ever, discuss politics know so little about it."

This was the conclusion of a paper by political scientist Elisabeth Gidengil in 2003. The paper got blood pressure rising in the Womanspace office, not because she was wrong, but because she was right! We women, the beneficiaries of feminism and the work of many suffragettes, have rejected the gifts of political participation and the franchise. Women reject politics with the familiar: "Politics has nothing to do with me and my problems." Womanspace was looking for solutions and then we found a group at the St. John's Status of Women Council doing "Feminism Fits" in which they encouraged women to write a monthly email to the premier on issues of importance in their province. We loved it and within a month we had created a team and a name "Martha's Monthly". Our inaugural month was June 2004.
